The Context
Dr. Alejandro Junger is the author of Clean, which teaches us how to turn our detoxification systems on full speed while supporting our bodies to maximize their effectiveness.
He is one of the world’s leading functional medicine doctors and his Clean detox program is adored by everyone from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Demi Moore to tens of thousands of people from communities just like yours all around the world.

Here are a few of our favorite big ideas from this week:
Big Idea #1: What We Eat = How We Feel
Dr. Junger grew up in Uruguay where fresh foods were abundant, and healthy eating was the way of life. He never had any nutritional classes in medical school there, so he had no idea that the foods he ate contributed to how he felt - it was simply how he lived.
After school, when he moved to New York, he was exposed to processed foods. As he consumed more and more of these, he became sick, developed severe allergies and digestive issues, and gained substantial weight.
After seeing multiple doctors and receiving many prescriptions, he thought, "how did my brain cells forget how to do their chemistry? This worked fine for so many years!"
Big Idea #2: Our 3 Meals: Liquid, Solid, Liquid
Juice fasts can work very well in a spa or detox setting, but what about in other places?
Dr. Junger actually found that full juice fasts were not as effective elsewhere, and he developed a different approach that meets the needs of most people:
- Liquid Breakfast
- Solid Lunch
- Liquid Dinner
This 3-meal system really works for city life; it's not the most intense way of detoxing (doing a full juice or water cleanse is still the most powerful), but it works for those in urban areas!
Big Idea #3: The Elimination Diet
You're eliminating things from your diet, not only because of the toxic chemicals, but also because of the difficulty the body has in digesting them.
The less the body has to work to digest certain foods, the better the body will be in detox mode. Digestion competes with the detox process.
The big foods to eliminate:
- Dairy
- Sugar
- Processed Foods
- Red Meat
- Coffee
- Alcohol
- Gluten
We also want to eliminate foods that are allergenic - the ones that cause allergies and intolerances. See the full list in the Clean Manual (link below).
