Here are a few of our favorite Big Ideas + Other Cool Stuff from Week 1 of Brian Piergrossi's Four-week course From Anxiety to Inner Piece.
At the age of 20 years old, Brian was suddenly struck by a mysterious, debilitating illness, later labeled chronic fatigue syndrome, that lasted for years, leaving him in intense, daily, physical pain and too weak to effectively function in society.
What began was over 11 years of committed, serious inquiry, study and personal application into the fields of spirituality, religion, psychology, sociology, cosmology, ecology, health, arts, science, yoga, as well as the core of the enlightenment and self-realization teachings.
After leading a quiet, simple life for over a decade, Brian felt a passionate calling to share his straight forward, timeless, spiritual truths for the 21st Century in a modern context with those who are ready and interested.
Big Idea #1: Breathe in the Now
We start this course by focusing on the breath because it's the best way to connect to "right now".
We live in a world where it's becoming increasingly difficult to stay present, but doing so is essential to living our greatest life.
Our breath is always happening in this moment and it's a simple yet powerful way to ground ourselves in the present.
If you're breathing deeply and consciously, you can't have anxiety. Conversely, you can't be at peace if you're breathing shalowly.
Whenever you feel yourself getting anxious or unable to stay in the now, ask yourself this fundamental question is: where’s my breath?
Big Idea #2: The Breath of Life
When you shift your breath, you shift your physiology, your neurochemistry, you shift how you feel. You shift your life!
That's why it's so important to be able to breathe deeply and consciously as we go through our day.
To develop conscious deep breathing, here's a simple exercise you can practice daily: lay on your back with your hand on your belly and feel it rising up and down every time you breathe.
You can start by breathing in for 5 and breathing out for 5, and see if you can increase the length of your inhales and exahles over time.
Additionally, yoga and exercise are a great way to get in touch with your breath and increase your general level of well-being.
Big Idea #3: Getting Out Of Your Head
When we get anxious or frustrated, we're generally stuck in our own head. We keep running the same story again and again, in an endless loop.
In those moments, our consciousness doesn't let us see the solution to the situation we're facing.
When you catch yourself being stuck in your head, start focusing on breathing through your whole body. The creative intelligence will start flowing again and you will start seeing the situation in a more empowered way.
When your body’s relaxed, you can let the creative flow through you and respond to the situation as it arises.
