The Context
Dr. Deanna Minich is an internationally-known nutritionist with more than fifteen years experience in the exciting field of nutrition. She has served food and dietary supplement industries as a nutrition expert since 2000 and began her private clinical practice in 2002.
In this 4-week course we are part of a group dialogue under the direction of Dr. Minich to redefine, reset and reinvigorate our relationship with food and eating in a way that will ripple out to the rest of our everyday living!
Here are three of the Big Ideas shared during class...
Big Idea #1: Embrace the Simple Miracle of Nourishment
Deanna mentioned during class that there is a lot beauty and wisdom in the simple, and that she likes to mix the simple with the complex to create simplexcity. We will be focusing a lot on the simple during class. One of Deanna's favorite quotes about simplicity as it relates to nutrition comes from Sondra Ray, "Nourishment is certainly the least acknowledged of personal daily miracles."
Big Idea #2: The Soul of Interconnectedness
Studies show that one of the most healing aspects to dieting is to have group interaction, to check in with people, feel accountable, and feel connected. Deanna shared her definition of spirituality as "the beauty and acknowledgement of interconnection." The connections of food are everywhere around us if we are ready to see them. Imagine a blueberry, the light that shone on it, the water that nourished it - something as simple as a small blueberry can help us get an idea of how incredibly interconnected everything really is.
Big Idea #3: How We Eat is How We Live
Research shows that we make 200+ decisions about food every day, which means more than 6 million interactions with food and eating in a lifetime. It is also estimated that we take in 2000 pounds of food per year, according to the USDA. "The act of consuming foods consumes us," Dr. Minich said during class, "How we eat is how we live, and how we live is how we eat." We can leverage food and eating to be more than just a simple act, in every bite that we take can be to heal or to harm. When you choose what to eat, you are choosing who you want to become.
