Here are a few of our favorite Big Ideas from Week 7 - Rise to the Challenge - Step UP!:

Big Idea #1: Jump Over The Fence!

Have you ever seen a dog that has an electric (invisible) fence?

At first, the dog probably ran around, oblivious to the fence. Then, as the dog approached the perimeter or ran past the boundary, it would get shocked. Eventually, because of the shocks, the dog avoids the boundary altogether and stops trying to get past the fence.

This is a concept called "Learned Helplessness" and it was studied by Martin Seligman (Authentic Happiness).

When things get too scary, we back down, and we don’t even approach the fence.

If we allow our fear to stop us, we will not become what we are meant to become!

Every now and then, though, the dog sees something on the other side of the fence they really want (a ball, a squirrel, another dog) – and they allow themselves to face their fear and discomfort.

When they learn that they feel the shock and they don’t die – their freedom is worth just a little bit of pain — they know it’s worth it!

What’s on the other side of your fence that you’re willing to make the leap, to experience a bit of discomfort?

Big Idea #2: What Level Are You Operating At?

Imagine you're a person with a character rating of 2 out of 10.

You see a problem that is a 3 out of 10. How do you respond? It’s going to seem overwhelming!

Now, imagine you’re operating at a level 8 — the level 3 challenges won’t even bother you!

How can you UP your level?

What's currently stressing you out or bothering you that really isn't that big of a deal? :)

How can you GROW and develop your character?

In the face of your current fears, hesitation and resistance, what would a level-10 you do to move forward?

Big Idea #3: Your Life Is A Video Game!

Most likely, either you have played video games or know someone who has! :)

Much like the video world, in the game of life:

  • The biggest challenges and the hardest to defeat opponents tend to be guarding the biggest prizes.
  • While winning, reaching the top or saving the princess is the ultimate goal, we spend 99% of the time playing the game. The joy is in playing – winning is gravy.
  • The more afraid you are, they more gold is waiting for you. Even more reason to charge ahead!
  • Floating around, looking at flowers – no one would want to play that kind of game for long. Life needs to have its adventure!

The next time the game of life feels too scary, it’s time to try on new beliefs:

  • “I am a fearless adventurer, here by choice, to play the ultimate game.”
  • “A little discomfort is totally worth a lifetime of freedom.”
  • “If I feel extra confronted it is time to get EXTRA EXCITED because I know big monsters mean big rewards.”

Wisdom from this week:

Do something every day that scares you, not terrifies you!

Be willing to be uncomfortable. Be comfortable being uncomfortable. It may get tough, but it’s a small price to pay for living a dream.
