Here are a few of our favorite Big Ideas from Week 4 - Ending the War of Emotional Eating.
Big Idea #1: You Are the Secret Recipe
We try diet after diet, hoping that we'll find the secret recipe that will help us overcome our weight problems.
There is no secret recipe. You are the recipe.
The only way for us to lose weight is through the recipe of self-love. Without self-love, any diet will become boring and after a month or two we'll chuck it out the window.
We overeat to fill a void that exists where there should be love. Sometimes we use food, sometimes alcohol, sometimes gossip, stress or overwork, but we are always trying to fill this void.
To create love for yourself, speak to yourself in loving ways.
At first speaking to yourself lovingly will be very hard. Fake it till you make it. Stand in front of the mirror, look at the body that you have spent so much time hating, and say, "I love you." You won't believe it at first. It doesn't matter. Keep going. In a couple of weeks, your words will begin to reprogram your mind,.
Big Idea #2: New Sources of Pleasure
For a long time now, we've used food as our source of pleasure. It works every time. As we begin to love ourselves more and transform our bodies, we need to find new ways to feel joy.
Dust off your bike and go for a ride. See how fun it can be to simply turn pedals as you hurdle down the street. Take a risk and go learn a new dance. Dancing is both fun and exercise. Go on a date. Go with someone, or go by yourself. A date with yourself can be a great way to give yourself love, whether you go to a movie, to the museum, or for a walk in the woods. Try surprising someone with a gift. Don't tell anyone who it's from. The joy of others is a wonderful, juicy pleasure.
Find new ways to have fun other than food. If you have to go to food as a source of pleasure, get the very best. It doesn't have to be fancy. But go to a farmer's market, talk to the farmers, see the flakes of earth on the food, smell it, touch it and create a ritual out of preparing and eating it. Simple, good ingredients bring joy.
Big Idea #3: The Power of NAP
NAP is a simple acronym that can be powerful when working with our cravings to overeat.
N: Notice. Notice the craving coming up in your awareness. Watch it carefully. Understand what void it is trying to fill and what the consequences of following your habitual actions will be.
A: Act! Now, choose a different action than you usually choose. Do something else that fulfills the need that your body/mind is trying to fill. Find another source of pleasure and satisfaction.
P: Presence. Be present to your new action, to the new moment, to the new desires coming up in your body. Don't run, Stay with it. Notice any new craving that arises.
