Here are a few of our favorite Big Ideas from Week 4!

Big Idea #1: The Teacher Will Come

Guy Finley says the old adage, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear" is true. In this class of life when the student is ready, the teacher appears with a lesson that is necessary to grow and develop

This “teacher” is available to us every moment of our life. Everything attracts to it what it needs to complete and perfect itself. When we love something, it’s because it attracts us because something in us is actually fulfilled by the relationship of seeing it.

"I get to experience the grace and knowledge that is already within me."

They reveal to you parts of yourself that you couldn’t find in any other way. But all attraction is two-sided. On the one hand, we attract to ourselves those things we need to develop ourselves, but at the same time, these things actively attract us to them.

In this special reciprocal communion there is a marriage born within us that is greater than anything we were before!

The exact same relationship applies to the unwanted moments we meet in life. There are parts of us “in the dark” – not yet conscious – that attract the circumstances needed to bring them out into the light of awareness.

The moment you don’t want has come to liberate you from limitation. But that liberation comes only to those who are willing to endure the initial reaction, and who then say to the moment, “I can see the good in you.”

When we are ready to uncover the unseen parts of ourselves, the “teacher” of the present moment can finally instruct the “student” within!

Big Idea #2: Go Through

Something within you wants to repeat the familiar experience it doesn’t like instead of entering into a truly unknown territory of yourself. All painful psychological patterns are created by some form of resistance to a revelation.

When we blame ourselves or someone else for what we’re going through, that action is a form of resistance.

When we try to push away unwanted moments, we are negatively attracted to them, and therefore secretly attached to them.

Resistance is a form of negative identification!

The Great Law of Self-Transformation: There is no way to go beyond what troubles you without going directly through it.

Go through!

Big Idea #3: The Watcher

Guy Finley says, "One day you’ll be more interested in your fear than you are in fearing it." Once this occurs, you will be "the watcher". The watcher observes, transcends, and accepts the present moment letting go of who they're supposed to be and embraces who they can be. The poem below inspires and explores this idea:

Poem by Ranier Maria Rilke

The Man Watching – Rainer Maria Rilke
I can tell by the way the trees beat, after
so many dull days, on my worried windowpanes
that a storm is coming,
and I hear the far-off fields say things
I can't bear without a friend,
I can't love without a sister.

The storm, the shifter of shapes, drives on
across the woods and across time,
and the world looks as if it had no age:
the landscape like a line in the psalm book,
is seriousness and weight and eternity.

What we choose to fight is so tiny!
What fights with us is so great!
If only we would let ourselves be dominated
as things do by some immense storm,
we would become strong too, and not need names.

When we win it's with small things,
and the triumph itself makes us small.
What is extraordinary and eternal
does not want to be bent by us.
I mean the Angel who appeared
to the wrestlers of the Old Testament:
when the wrestlers' sinews
grew long like metal strings,
he felt them under his fingers
like chords of deep music.

Whoever was beaten by this Angel
(who often simply declined the fight)
went away proud and strengthened
and great from that harsh hand,
that kneaded him as if to change his shape.
Winning does not tempt that man.
This is how he grows: by being defeated, decisively,
by constantly greater beings.
